Vanmoof Electrified X2 E-Bike Review

E-BIKE INFO, REVIEWS
Vanmoof Electrified X2 E-Bike Review

E-bikes are costly. The simplest pedal-assist bikes start at around $1,000 and quickly rise well above $3,000 once a little addition is added to the design.

But just imagine an e-bike being shared with the entire family to help justify the cost?

Vanmoof Electrified X2 E-Bike Review

Imagine the value you’ll get using an e-bike as a daily commuter during the week, and then handing it off on the weekend or evenings to someone that needs it.

To do that, you’d need a bike with visual appeal and a frame that can accommodate riders of all sizes. Something like the Electrified X2 from Dutch bike maker VanMoof.

Commuters are now discovering the benefits of electrified personal travel. The e-bike strikes a good balance of price, convenience, safety, comfort, range, and familiarity to most people.

E-bikes greatly extend the radius of what is normally considered bikeable, allowing riders to arrive at work sweat-free while also promoting a healthier planet and person. Many e-bike commuters have been able to reduce their need for cars and public transportation helping to offset the cost of the bike.

The Electrified X2, available in both black and white, can accommodate riders as small as 5 feet (155 cm) or as tall as 6 feet 5 inches (200 cm). The compact X-frame design, popular in Asia, also features 24-inch wheels instead of the larger 28-inch ones found on most city bikes.

The X2 is small, but not like a Brompton. The VanMoof doesn’t fold like a Brompton bicycle, however that could cost you if you’re planning to take the X2 on public transport where folding bikes are often allowed to be carried on for free.

A non-removable 504Wh battery is housed in the down tube, and can be removed by any bike shop when it needs replacing. The 250W motor is in the front-wheel hub, giving off a max speed of 32 km/h (22 mph).

Vanmoof Electrified X2

The motor’s not silent, so you can’t fake your super-human speed: it’s a little louder than that latest generation of Bosch mid-drive motors, but not as loud as the Mate X.

The X2 features a removable “Smart Cartridge” in the top tube, containing the printed circuit board, radios, display, controller, etc. That way if VanMoof can’t remotely repair your bike with a software tweak you can always remove the cartridge yourself and send it in without shipping the entire bike.

A very useful Boost button near the right grip can be pressed and held when you need an extra push off the starting line or up an incline. It’s addictive to use but will shorten your expected range.

VanMoof claims a range of 150km in eco mode, but that must be very tedious and slow. The battery on X2 gets fully charged in about four hours. It’ll charge from 0 to 50 percent in 80 minutes, says the company.

Although the battery’s not removable, the X2 easily fits through doors or into an elevator where it can be charged inside. The X2 is surprisingly heavy at nearly 42 pounds (19 kg). The Electrified X2 features a two-speed automatic transmission.

Even with the motor off, the VanMoof is surprisingly easy to propel forward with your leg strength alone, something that’s good to know if you ever run down your battery.

One of the trademark design flourishes of VanMoof bikes is the extended top tube with integrated front and rear lighting. The front light produces 40 Lux while the rear light is designed for a wide angle of visibility. The lights can be set to on, off, or automatic.

The X2 comes with a whole host of tech. Chief amongst them is the display, 166 LEDs integrated right into the aluminum of the top tube. It’s such a lovely piece of engineering that the display alone would make you buy a VanMoof. It can be difficult to see in direct sunlight, but it shows the bike’s battery level, speed, and other useful data, in addition to whether it’s locked or not.

The X2 features a built-in “Stealth Lock,” a locking pin that you kick to secure the rear wheel and arm the theft defense. If someone jostles your X2 after the Stealth Lock is engaged, a sinister animated skull appears on the display, an alarm sounds, and the front and rear lights begin to flash. Theft protection is VanMoof’s calling card.

If movement continues for more than a minute, the alarm will sound continuously. If it’s not disarmed within two minutes the X2 goes into theft mode: S.O.S. appears on the display, the bike starts broadcasting its location to VanMoof, and the motor and all smart functionality is disabled.

There’s also a VanMoof app, for those who prefer to lock / unlock their bikes that way.

The app also has options that let you unlock the bike when you’re nearby. It worked fine the few times I tested it. The app also shows your bike’s location, which can be helpful when searching for your bike in the massive bicycle parking structures.

As a city bike, a carrier is critical for trips to the market and what not. The front carrier on the X2, is as compact as the bike itself. It’s big enough to haul a small bag or a briefcase.

Vanmoof also sells two other hauling options for the X2: an attractive bamboo-clad basket capable of holding up to 22 pounds (10 kgs) of goods, or a rather dull, but likely more useful rear carrier capable of supporting 33 pounds (15 kgs).

Riding the X2 feels like riding a full-sized city bike. It is an extraordinarily impressive e-bike that’s suitable for sharing thanks to its ability to accommodate such a vast range of rider heights. It has a relatively diminutive size, but in a big, densely congested city, its smaller size is a real advantage.

The X2 is worth every bit especially for families, or any shared housing situation that can maximize its use. Yes, you can get cheaper e-bikes, but not with such complex engineering, thoughtful design, long list of useful features, and proven commitment to service.

OHM Mountain E-Bike Review

E-BIKE INFO, REVIEWS
OHM MOUNTAIN E BIKE REVIEW

The Mountain is the most durable and resilient off-road e-bike and it comes with some top class components such as TRP Zurich hydraulic disc brakes, a 10-speed Shimano Deore XT drivetrain, and an air suspension fork.

The difference between the OHM mountain and other available electric mountain bikes is the hub motor design. It is extremely quiet, offers regen drive modes and regenerative braking, doesn’t affect shifting and is therefore easier on the chain, sprocket, and derailleurs, and it can be started with a throttle as well as torque sensing pedal assist.

OHM MOUNTAIN E BIKE REVIEW

OHM MOUNTAIN E BIKE REVIEW

Talking about speed, the OHM Mountain can be setup as a Class 2 product with throttle and assist limited to 20 mph or you can ask for a Class 3 system where the top speed would be 28 mph in pedal assist mode and 20 mph with the throttle.

If you’re choosing to use it as an “all terrain” commuter platform, you could add a rear rack for cargo or panniers and OHM can also add a USB charging port and integrated lights if you pay more. The frame is Aluminum alloy with a top quality paint finish and upgraded head tube, bottom bracket and yoke.

Thru-axles and wider Boost hubs provide strength and the overall weight is ~51 lbs which is good considering how powerful the motor is and the battery capacity. A few compromises were made around how the kickstand was mounted, and you can hear it rattling whenever you ride the mountain trails but this is easy to remove.

This bike has one of the coolest hub motors ever. This is the D-Series 500 watt gearless hub motor. It’s very wide but skinny, and is encased in a composite plastic shell compared to heavier Aluminum alloy.

The motor gets a good mechanical advantage from the wide design and because there is more air inside, it also stays cooler. With up to 50 Newton meters of peak torque, it’s very good for climbing if you pedal along and it can climb moderate inclines with the throttle only, as long as you have a bit of momentum going.

Ohm mountain e bike

Ohm mountain e bike

Unlike most other hub motors, this one is connected just to the hub and spokes run around the casing instead of connecting to it. The benefit is longevity and resilience, you get a more natural and consistent feel with this motor design.

Gearless hub motors have fewer moving parts, nothing is rubbing inside and therefore, they tend to last longer.
Powering the bike is an efficient and powerful 48 volt 11.6 amp hour battery.

Unlike some of the older BionX batteries that mounted in a rear rack or onto the downtube, this one seats into it a bit. This lowers the battery position and provides some extra space in the triangle section of the frame for bottle cage bosses and a lower top tube.

Between the four frame size options, the lower top tube, and some changes between the stem, bar, and crank arm length of each size, the bike offers a great fit. The battery pack can be charged on or off the bike frame, and this allows for independent storage as well.

You can tell how full the battery pack is by using the display panel, the bluetooth app, or the little control ring near the right grip or you can touch the metal plug port on the left side of the battery and it will light up with green, orange, or red. This battery holds onto the frame with ease, uses six rubber pads to reduce any kind of noise and scratching between the pack and the frame, and it charges quickly.

It weighs less than a pound, is super compact, and yet it puts out 3.45 Amps compared to just 2 Amps on most standard chargers.

There are many display alternatives, whether you’re choosing to use the minimalist LED readouts on the control ring, or the transflective backlit color LCD display, or your smartphone, you can control four levels of assist and four levels of regen.

The most important control features are always available to you, also, the + and – keys on the control pad are very intuitive. Primarily, you can choose how much power you want delivered by the motor. There is also a left and right key which can be used to navigate the LCD display to show different views.

The basic view is very good, it shows 10 bars to illustrate how full the battery pack is but if you arrow to the right twice, there is a data view display readout that shows battery percentage along with more trip stats and details.

It’s so cool to have this as an option, in part because data view is black and white which could be less distracting for some riders. Note that you can also enter into a settings menu by arrowing right to setup and then holding the grey key for a few seconds. This is definitely one of the nicest displays ever and it’s very flexible while still being simple.

Considering all factors, this is not the best bike for all mountain type riding with bumps and rocks everywhere. The larger tires are designed to be stable, comfortable, and floaty so you can ride over obstacles and soft terrain compared to nimbling around them.

It’s lovely that the bike comes with a chain keeper to perform well on bumpy terrain, and that you get premium touch points like the Ergon grips and saddle along with the Schwalbe Nobby Nic tires

OHM City E Bike Review

E-BIKE INFO, REVIEWS
OHM CITY E BIKE REVIEW

The OHM city is an urban friendly e-bike, a total package with fenders, a rear rack and integrated lights. It comes with four frame size options and also comes with two motor choices.

The primary $3k version with an efficient 350 watt gearless hub motor reaching 20mph. For $1k more, you get the secondary version, a high-torque 500 watt gearless hub motor reaching 20mph or 28mph.

OHM CITY E BIKE REVIEW

Both drive systems use an advanced torque sensor that’s built into the hub motor itself. The e-bike moves smoothly and feels natural to ride. Both motors offer regenerative braking to reduce wear and tear on brake pads. This e-bike is good for commuting and grocery getting.

Because of the low standover height and lower minimum saddle, the bike is good for small people. And also because of the sturdy frame, you have options carrying different things. What also makes this bike special are the upgraded components and reasonable price point.

For roughly $3k, you’re getting tubular alloy fenders that won’t rattle, name-brand lights with metal housings, mountain bike grade hydraulic disc brakes with quad piston calipers and tool-free adjustable reach levers, comfortable Ergon locking grips and saddle, double wall rims with reinforcement eyelets for strength, a highly adjustable lightweight air suspension fork with thru-axle wheel mount, magnesium pedals with adjustable pins, and a sealed headset and bottom bracket that won’t rust or creak when they get wet.

You can also see the attention paid to detail in parts like the narrow-wide chainring that reduces potential for chain drops, the handlebar-mounted headlight (that points wherever you steer, won’t bounce around, and is positioned below the removable color LCD display panel), the double-tube frame that doesn’t flex as much as competing step-thru designs, the Shimano Deore XT drivetrain with one-way clutch and upgraded shifter mechanism for responsive gear changing, the sturdy alloy bash guard and performance-grade hollow spindle at the bottom bracket, the high-volume puncture resistant tires with reflective sidewall stripes, and the lightweight 3.45 amp charger that is smaller and faster than most.

With peak torque output at 50 Newton meters on the D-Series and peak wattage around 750, this is one of the strongest legal hub motors.

This extra power should be useful for people encountering steep hills or moving heavier loads. But it does cost $1k more as an upgrade. And it certainly looks unique.

The casing of the large diameter on the D-Series motor is a sort of composite plastic that is lightweight, durable, and unobtrusive in black. It won’t get scratched or nicked up the way that painted alloy casings might, and the spokes connect closer to the center of the wheel, which improves comfort.

However, with such a large diameter, this motor does catch some wind from the side. By comparison, the less expensive 350 watt motor is encased in an alloy hub that actually weighs more despite being physically smaller.

It doesn’t offer as much torque, but is still very capable. Both motors are near-silent and both offer regeneration. Also remember that the trigger throttle only becomes active once the bike has reached 2mph.

So, it’s not as helpful when starting after a stop sign or traffic signal. You’ll have to kick off and pedal for a second before the throttle will work. Still, the trigger throttle and control pad buttons are easy to reach and simple to understand.

Powering the bike, the backlit display, two integrated extra-bright LED lights, and an optional USB power port, is a high capacity Lithium-ion battery pack from BionX. It offers efficient 48 volts and 11.6 amp hours for a total of 556.8 watt hours of capacity. That’s over half a kilowatt hour.

The battery will provide a range between 25 and 70 miles, but that depends on which motor you opt for and how you ride the bike. High speed operation takes a big toll on efficiency because of air resistance.

Throttle mode, while fun, is a battery drainer because both motors offer above-average torque output and acceleration. The trigger throttle is ramped, so you can press gently for less power, but the actual button movement is small, so precise throttling takes some practice.

Unlike many other throttles, this one is easy to reach and not tiring to press constantly. It is a trigger throttle that means you can really grip and handle the bike well. In contrast, some twist throttles can compromise hand grip and position.

You can use the throttle at full power to override assist. There’s no need for clicking up and down through different menus to get the throttle active, the way some other products require.

Anyway, the battery can be charged on or off the bike frame and uses a quick 3.45 amp charger vs. the standard 2 amp I see elsewhere. You can fill the battery quickly and get back out onto the road for more fun or extended rides.

The removability of the display, battery, quick release front wheel, and seat post, make the bike easy to transport, protect, and store. Note that the battery does not have an obvious handle and would definitely get scratched and possibly damaged if dropped.

At 7.4 lbs, it’s not the lightest thing so be careful when handling it or use a bag to carry it. There’s a really cool touch-sensitive LED readout on the left side of the battery box which communicates charge level, whether the battery is mounted to the bike or not, and it’s quite handy.

The display options on this electric bike are many, whether you choose to use the minimalist LED readouts on the control ring, the transflective backlit color LCD display, or your smartphone, you can control four levels of assist and four levels of regeneration.

The + and – keys on the control pad are very intuitive. In it’s most basic form, you get to choose how much power the motor delivers or how much drag it introduces through recuperation.

In addition to the plus and minus, there are also left and right buttons on the control ring which can be used to navigate the LCD display; to show different views. Most people prefer the basic view and love that it show 10 bars to illustrate how full the battery pack is.

This is a big improvement over most displays that just show four or five bars, offering less precision. If you arrow to the right twice, you’ll discover an “advanced” or data view readout listing an even more precise battery percentage along with more trip stats and details.

It’s so cool to have this as an option available, in part because data view is black and white compared to color, which could be less distracting for some riders during low lighting conditions. Note that you can also enter into a settings menu to adjust units and other aspects of the display.

This is definitely one of the nicest displays ever and its very flexible. While still being simple. Being able to take it off of the bike and still use the bike (with the control ring) is neat, and potentially very useful if you misplace the display or end up damaging it. You could use the spot where the display is mounted for some other device for longer rides, if you wanted.

OHM Sport E-Bike Review

E-BIKE INFO, REVIEWS
OHM Sport E-Bike Review

This is a high quality speed pedelec with very good accessories, including aluminum fenders, integrated Supernova lights, a removable color LCD display, and regenerative braking.

The OHM sport e-bike is very well balanced, especially for a hub-motor electric bike. The air fork, hollow-spindle bottom bracket, and upgraded alloy frame keep the weight down. It also rides super quiet.

It’s only available in black, but the motor, wires, and semi-integrated battery pack match beautifully and blend in, larger Super Moto-X tires improve traction and look cool.

Ohm Sport E Bike Review

The powerful hydraulic disc brakes makes for great stopping power and the right brake lever initiates regenerative braking, the BionX system offers four regen ride modes.

The OHM Sport does come with a high quality rack and 70 mm wide Aluminum alloy fenders which offer great utility for daily distance rides or light trail riding through dirt and mud, you’d be marveled at how quiet they are and that they are able to contain bottle cage bosses onto the seat tube (for fluids, a folding lock, or mini pump accessory).

Let’s not forget the integrated lights from Supernova and this one uses the premium M99 model headlight with day and night sensor for automatic switching between running and bright mode. The backlight has five led’s and is protected by the rack.

This e-bike’s control is easily workable and accessible including the mini button ring near the right grip, the compact transflective color LCD panel, or the smart phone app, being able to remove the display for parking (to reduce wear and tampering) is fantastic.

There are four frame sizes meaning you can get an appropriate fit for your body type. The stem, handlebar, and crank arms vary between the four sizes. The top tube is angled down to make the bike easier to mount and stand over.

Considering how sturdy and well accessorized this e-bike is, anyone will be amazed with the 56.5 lb weight (only one pound heavier than the OHM Urban). It’s got sturdy metal lights, large tires, a high-capacity battery, and a powerful gearless motor. But things like magnesium pedals, a minimalist kickstand, hollow spindle bottom bracket, and air fork all make a difference.

The all-black and grey color combo looks great with the battery casing, motor hub, and wires all blending in. The decals match are minimalist in design and really cool (especially under the downtube) vs. flashy, and OHM also includes some touchup paint to keep it looking nice.

First seeing the bike, and knowing that the BionX D-Series motor weighs ~8.8 lbs, you’d expect it to be rear-heavy but when you lift it just in front of the saddle nose it will tip forward vs. back, It’s very well balanced and the weight is all kept low for improved handling vs. a rack battery.

There are comfortable touch points including locking ergonomic grips, finger-adjustable brake levers, a sporty Ergon gel saddle, and wider Schwalbe tires with a medium-range pressure recommendation.

Safety is important, and since this bike is black, I appreciate the reflective graphics on the tires and and bright integrated lights, You’d also like the sturdy thru-axle on the fork with Boost and large tapered head tube for stable riding.

Riding this e-bike will always get you feeling good, it’s more polished, quiet and balanced than a lot of others… it’s also one of the few that even offer a throttle mode which is fun to use.

Although regenerative braking doesn’t put much power back into the battery, it does reduce wear on brake pads and can be used to simulate climbing with the four minus levels on the BionX system.

The present unique design of the hub motor casing, being relatively slim but tall, allows for the spokes to connect at the hub vs. the outside of the hub motor and this allows them to flex naturally providing a wanted level of comfort and performance that most other hub motor e-bikes lack, the greater air volume inside the hub allows it to cool more efficiently.

The battery pack clicks in from the left side vs. down from the top which means it won’t bump into the frame as easily when mounting or dismounting and the top tube can be lower. It’s a good thing that the battery is rated against dust and water, uses a fast charger, can be filled on or off the bike, has several rubber pads to reduce vibration, and even has a touch-activated capacity indicator (where the charger plugs in) it lights up green at 70%+, orange between 20% and 70%, and red when below 20%.

After a few minutes of inactivity, the display panel will automatically power of. It has lots of settings where you can change brightness, units, etc. to make it fit your preferences and style.

Larger 180 mm hydraulic disc brakes provide the kind of stopping power that mountain bikers need, so it’s cool to have them on a sporty trail bike here, specifically because it weighs more and can be switched to 28 mph Class 3 if you want (I think you can ask OHM to do this and change the Class sticker before it’s shipped to you).

Shimano Deore XT is a mid to high-level drivetrain and ten speeds is enough to let you climb and reach higher speeds comfortably. Though the larger 48 tooth chainring is setup more for speed, there are times where you’ll need to ride in the absolute lowest gear because of a hilly terrain. It’s good that the derailleur has a one way clutch to reduce chain bounce (the little grey lever, point it up to tighten the chain).

The chainring has a plastic inner guide to reduce drops, it’s not going to keep your pants or a skirt as clean as a chain guide or chain cover but it reduces weight and is practical.

The cockpit is relatively clean because of how the display and light are mounted, the handlebar clamp positions the large Supernova light below the display and they are both at the center for optimal use.

Ohm Urban E-Bike Review

E-BIKE INFO, REVIEWS
ohm urban e bike review

This is an almost silent e-bike with very rich features and an urban hardtail that’s available in four frame sizes and can be switched from Class 2 with throttle to high-speed Class 3.

The proprietary torque sensor is integrated into the 12 mm rear-axle, it feels fluid and sporty to pedal with and less finicky than older TMM4 or bottom bracket sensors. OHM overbuilds their bikes so even though this is an urban model, it still has a tapered head tube, a 15 mm thru-axle, an adjustable air fork, and a hollow spindle bottom bracket.

OHM URBAN REVIEW

The BionX D-Series hub motor is powerful and quick but visually it does stand out more than a compact gearless design, the trigger throttle only activates whenever the bike is moving.

The premium rack and 60 mm Aluminum alloy fenders offer a ton of utility.

The integrated lights from Supernova tend to last longer because of metal housings and sturdy mounts, It’s nice how the headlight is positioned below the handlebar to make room for the LCD display.

This e-bike’s control is easily workable and accessible including the mini control ring near the right grip, the compact color LCD panel, or the smart phone app, being able to remove the display for parking (to reduce wear and tampering) is fantastic.

The four frame sizes mean you can find an appropriate fit and the semi-integrated battery makes space for a bottle cage and lower top tube to make the bike easier to mount.

Considering how sturdy and well accessorized this e-bike is, anyone will be impressed with the 55.7 lb weight, it has metal lights, a high-capacity battery, and a powerful motor but things like magnesium pedals, a minimalist kickstand, hollow spindle bottom bracket, and air fork all make a difference.

You’ll like how this bike looks, the decals are minimalist and the light grey is gender neutral, the oversized headset is a signature look and also provides more strength.

Knowing that the BionX D-Series motor weighs ~8.8 lbs, You’d expect it to be rear-heavy, but if lifted just in front of the saddle nose and tipped forward vs. back, you’ll feel that it’s very well balanced and the weight is all kept low for improved handling vs. a rack battery.

There are a lot of comfortable touch points including locking ergonomic grips, finger-adjustable brake levers, a sporty Ergon gel saddle, and wider Schwalbe tires with a medium-range pressure recommendation.

Since safety is a big deal, the lighter frame color, reflective tires, and bright integrated lights are a big win, everything just works and the lights run off of the primary battery.

Riding this bike just feels good, it’s more polished, quiet and balanced than a lot of others. It’s also one of the few bikes that even offers a throttle mode which is fun to use.

Even though regenerative braking doesn’t put much power back into the battery, it does reduce wear on brake pads and can be used to simulate climbing with the four levels on the BionX system, overall it’s pretty neat.

The unique design of the hub motor casing, being relatively slim but tall, allows for the spokes to connect at the hub vs. the outside of the hub motor and this allows them to flex naturally providing a level of comfort and performance that most other hub motor e-bikes lack.

The battery pack clicks in from the left side vs. down from the top which means it won’t bump into the frame as easily and the top tube can be lower, it’s good that the battery is rated against dust and water, it uses a fast charger, can be filled on or off the bike, and even has a touch-activated capacity indicator (where the charger plugs in) it lights up green at 70%+, orange between 20% and 70%, and red when below 20%.

After a few minutes of inactivity, the display panel automatically powers of. It has lots of settings where you can change brightness, units, etc. to make it fit your preferences and style.

Larger 180 mm hydraulic brakes provide the kind of stopping power that mountain bikers need, so it’s cool to have them on more of an urban bike, specifically because it weighs more and can be switched to 28 mph Class 3 if you want (It’s not a bad idea to inform OHM to do this and change the Class sticker before it’s shipped to you).

Shimano Deore XT is a mid to high-level drivetrain and ten speeds is enough to let you climb and reach higher speeds comfortably. Although the larger 48 tooth chainring is setup more for speed, there are times where you’ll need to ride in the absolute lowest gear because of a hilly terrain. It’s good that the derailleur has a one way clutch to reduce chain bounce (the little grey lever, point it up to tighten the chain).

The chainring has an alloy guard to keep your pants or skirt clear along with a plastic inner guide to reduce drops, basically they combine to create reliability when on bumpy terrain.

This is an economical eCargo bike with a high capacity 48V 14ah lithium battery, 750 watt direct drive motor, sturdy aluminum frame, disc brakes, and a lot of accessory options.

RAD WAGON REVIEW

The RadWagon e-bike is probably the electric bike with the most rich features. It offers better control and operation thanks to its cadence sensing pedal assist and twist throttle. The twist throttle’s presence gives instant power. It has a suspension fork with a lockout also a pedal assist with cadence sensor.

There’s also a direct drive hub motor for Regenerative Braking and a lithium-ion battery for longer battery life. There are Integrated headlights with lots of compatible accessories.
